This has been a little thought that has been bugging me for a while now… I spend pretty much all of my time plugged in to this web, a web that stretches world wide, and there are some “celebrities” who I have pretty much never heard of.
The most recent one to come to mind was iJustine. All I know about her is that she has a station on justin.tv, and that is it. I have no idea why she is the 15th most followed person on Twitter. What did she do to become popular? Am I really missing out by not knowing people like her?
One reason I have had this on my mind is I had picked up a justin.tv station about a year ago, and she (along with a few others) were constantly in the “most watched” section. Some where there for a gimick, but I couldn’t really figure out why she was popular. Granted, it was difficult to stay on her station, what with the constant chat spam by guys trying to get in her pants, but I never figured it out.
I guess I am reminded of the Jay & Silent Bob animated series, in which Jay claims that he and Bob have their finger on the pulse of the community. They are surprised by Leonardo Leonardo coming to town, and a reporter claims that he would be unknown to those that have their finger far form the pulse of the community. I like to think that I have my finger somewhere near the pulse of the overall internet community, but I question myself when I am oblivious to people like iJustine.
