18JanVisualizing a Podcast

This past weekend Sara and I went to her family’s house in Wintergreen, VA for some skiing and to have a relaxing weekend. On Saturday I got up to cook up some breakfast and since I was the only one in the kitchen at that point, I decided to put on one of the Fancy Pants Gangsters podcasts while I was cooking. Without thinking, I turned on the visualizer and was surprised that it made the podcast look owwsome:

14Jan“Old School” Game covers

Kotaku recently featured some image of modern movies imagined as Atari game cases. I am a huge sucker for making something new look old, as you can see in this other blog post.

Here is one image, you can click on the image to see the full gallery over on Kotaku’s site:

19DecA fun TF2 night

I just finished my last day of my coop, and to unwind I booted up some Team Fortress 2 because nothing says relaxing like running around with a blowtorch or building an automated sentry gun.

14DecInternet People are funny

I was listening to an episode of Yet Another Gaming Show, and Ashley, one of the people on the podcast, mentioned that she was done playing Scribblenauts and if there was anyone out there that wanted to borrow it, she would send it to them. Since I just got a DSi not too long ago, I figured I would take her up on the offer. The game was one I was interested in and getting it for free is always better than paying for it.

I had to laugh when I got the package…

It was funny that she felt the need to put both her and my XBox Live/Forum names on the envelope. I don’t know if she thought I wouldn’t know who the package was coming from (even though she uses her real name on the podcast) or what, but seeing mail addressed to my internet nom de plume made my day.

I am playing through Scribllenauts and will be recording a review for the fine people at YAGS… hopefully they will use it. Also, I am sending a surprise Ashley’s way.

09OctMy MythTV Adventure Part 2.5 – The brief overview

I have a full blown post on hacking an AppleTV to get it to play nice with MythTV in the works, but it is something that benefits from step-by-step pictures and that is something I can’t get while I am in New York. To help bridge the gap, I am going to just point you to the patchstick creator and give a general outline of what needs to be done. If you are going to follow this to modify your AppleTV, please do research to fill the gaps. I can’t be held responsible for you bricking your AppleTV.

  1. Head to http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/ and download the patch stick creator
  2. Make said patchstick
  3. Unplug your appleTV
  4. Plug the patchstick in to the usb slot
  5. turn on the appleTV
  6. let the magic happen
  7. Reboot aTV
  8. Update the Software Menu
  9. Install updated versions of NeroTV, Boxee/XBMC
  10. Install all extras (debian, video codecs, etc)
  11. Configure NFS mount to point to MythTV recording directory (Needs to be -P)
  12. SSH in to aTV, add the NFS mount to rc.local
  13. restart aTV
  14. Boot up Boxee/XBMC
  15. If going with XBMC, ssh in to aTV, install MythBox plugin
  16. Set up mythtv connection inside Boxee/XBMC
  17. profit

Like I said, I will have a full guide once I get home to take some pictures, but this will have to do for now.

05OctWindows Mobile twitter client

If you ever pay attention to my rants and raves, you know one of my main problems with my Windows Mobile based phone is the lack of decent applications. Both the iPhone and Android-based devices have a centralized “App Store”, and there seems to be a metric shit ton of active development for both platforms. Microsoft is rolling out their “Mobile Marketplace” tomorrow, but I feel like it will be too little too late.

There are some decent applications that I have found, with the largest range being in twitter clients. I was having some problems with my phone constantly hard reseting lately, and in doing research I came across a new twitter client for Windows Mobile, and so far it has been great.

moTweet from Panoramic is a really smooth application. The interface looks really nice, however, I did have some trouble figuring out where everything was. After a few minutes of poking around in the app, I was able to find most of the features I was looking for.

They have two versions of the app, one for free (with add support) and a $4 version. I went with the free version, since I am rather cheap. The client can also handle multiple accounts and comes with a variety of skins.

If you are like me and not cool enough to own an iPhone or Android based device, you should check out moTweet.

11SepGeektionary: Melt Face

I have made many references to “melting face”, both here and on twitter. I realized that not everyone understands what exactly I mean by having one’s face melted. I just finished playing “I am the Walrus” on Beatles:Rock Band, and I finally have an example to help illustrate:

Just watch all the visuals for this song.. and put a drip pan on your lap to catch all the pieces of your face that melt off:

The first thing I said once I finished the song was “What the fuck just happened?”.
