I found the video that I was rendering when my old laptop died. I can’t seem to figure out why this video would have caused it any problems… it isn’t like independently modeling hairs moving in 3D is tough on a system or anything…

The computer killer

As I mentioned a few days ago on twitter, I have been working with Geektool to really turn my mac’s desktop in to what I need it to be. I figured that since I had this brand new machine (read: my old one finally was replaced after 10 visits to the Genius Bar in under 3 years), I should make everything work the way I wanted it to while it was nice and clean.

I set out in this customization with a few goals in mind:

  1. I wanted to be able to view the weather at a glance
  2. I wanted to have the date/month visible
  3. I wanted to have information from my iCal displayed
  4. I wanted my dock to take a back seat in the visual hierarchy
  5. I wanted everything to look clean

Here is the final outcome:

There is something exciting about really good product design. This stuff, for example, makes me happy when I see it:

CSS Grid frameworks are one of my newest favorite things. I have been using the 960 Grid for my portfolio redesign, and it has made my life 1000000 times easier.

Here is a collection of a wide array of grid frameworks for all my web people out there:

All because of this video:

I was trying to figure out how they did this.. At first I thought it was a camera on a dolly, and they shot each person individually then composite them all together. But after watching it a few times, I realized that wasn’t it… The time of each person stayed constant regardless of the radial position of the camera. I am not sure how this was done (and if I took the time to look online, I could probably find the “making of” video). Maybe they had a ring of cameras, a la bullet time in The Matrix, and then took all the cameras out in post.

Thoughts?

My head exploded

I recently came across a prototype of a video game that uses the exterior views of the passenger as the land bounderies for a flying ship. There have been many times as a child that I thought it would be fun to integrate the things I was seeing in with a video game I was playing.

The only thing I wonder is how this would be legal. I know most areas have specific laws governing the amount of visual interference the driver can have on the side windows.

This Helvetica based Monopoly board by Florent Guerlain is a wonderful way to organize and present information.  I would love to see more classic games reimagined this way:

I came across this video over on College Humor. This is a really interesting concept, using alliteration to come up with lyrics in alphabetical order.

I came across this post from Unplggd.com, covering a “steampunk” cell phone, which used binary punch-cards to dial out. Just look, it is beautiful.

When I first started learning how to use After Effects, I immediately thought of finding new ways to get visual and audio cues to interact. I am a firm believer that the more sense we can get to concentrate on the same stimulus, the greater the reaction will be.

This video for the Chemical Brothers does just that. Pay attention to the repetition of elements and how they tie in seamlessly with the audio.
